Getting Started with Affiliate Marketing

By Vic Bilson

More and more people are getting started with one of the most popular businesses around - the business of affiliate marketing. In this business, there are no bosses, deadlines to meet, or piles of work that have to be finished by the end of the day.

Affiliate marketing is where a merchant will pay a portion of their sales revenue to an affiliate when a sale occurs as the result of the affiliate's promotion of a product or service offered by the merchant. It's one of the fastest growing industries today because it's cost efficient and quantifiable for both the affiliate and the merchant.

There are esentially five requirements for you if you want to be successful in the business of affiliate marketing.

  1. Desire to learn
You must possess the desire to learn combined with the willingness to be trained. Treading through unfamiliar territory is tough indeed, especially if you're lacking knowledge about creating web sites and on-line marketing. When starting out, you'll need to be willing to learn from the the experience of others and continue to learn more as you go. This means you'll also need to have the right frame of mind coupled with a strong work ethic.

  2. Invest time and effort
You must have the willingness to invest your time and effort in helping your business grow, even if you don't see immediate results. It may take weeks or even months before you start earning money, but the investment is very important for anyone who wants to get their foot in the affiliate marketing business world.

  3. Determination
If you want to make it in the affiliate marketing world, you must possess the determination to push yourself forward. The ability to push yourself to greater heights will determine what type of future you have.

  4. Discipline
Related to all of the above, you'll also need self discipline. If you teach yourself to work everyday with all of your heart and soul, you'll be that much closer to reaching your goals and making your dreams come true.

  5. Optimism
Finally, you must have optimism. Bad attitudes should never discourage an affiliate marketer from pursuing their dreams in order to make life better for themselves and those around them. Your attitude towards the business should always be good. Remember, you're the captain of your ship and you're the one steering it towards your destiny.

Once you're ready to join the growing legion of affiliate marketers and have an unlimited potential for income, simply follow these 4 steps to get started with an affiliate marketing program.

  1. Identify the niche
Identify something that interests you or you feel very passionate about. Then, focus on a particular topic you know a lot about so you can give your visitors a demonstration of your knowledge in this field. You'll gain their trust and encourage them to buy the products that you endorse.

  2. Match the niche to a product
Find merchants and products or services that are related to your interest. When choosing the products for your web site, you'll need to consider the commission structure and the conversion rate. Although it may be tempting to go for programs with the highest payouts, those programs won't pay you anything if your visitors don't buy. Be sure you're matched your niche site visitors to a product that they would really be interested in.

There are many different affiliate networks where you can obtain the information on the most profitable products and which merchants pay the best. Take your time - and be sure you choose the right one.

    Some of my favorites include:
    Commission Junction
    LinkShare
    ClickBank

  3. Launch your web site
If you already have a website set up, you can add an affiliate program to it, or you can simply build a new site to promote the particular product or service. You'll want to secure a top level domain name and reliable hosting for your affiliate site.

  4. Promote, promote, promote
Once you've created your web site and placed your affiliate links, you're now ready to promote. You'll need to be creative, flexible, and willing to embrace new ideas.

Once you learn what you are doing with affiliate programs, you can make a lot of money. If you're just starting out, always use common sense and not rush into anything. As you become more familiar with how things work, you'll be well on your way to making a lot of money - and enjoying making it.
